We don't just deliver nutritious meals…. We deliver smiles!
Meals on Wheels clients receive a hot lunch and a deli dinner that provides two-thirds of their daily nutritional needs. The visits by friendly volunteers also provide a daily check on the client's well-being.
A typical hot lunch includes a meat entree, potato, vegetable, milk, bread and dessert. A deli dinner usually includes a sandwich, salad, fruit or juice, milk and dessert.
All meals are prepared in consultation with the client's physician. The food is prepared in the kitchens of 14 hospitals and health care centers under the supervision of registered dieticians. Meals can be prepared to accommodate special needs, such as low-sodium and sugar-free diets.
*Please note: Both meals are packaged in disposable containers that cannot be heated in a microwave oven.
Frozen Food Program
To assist our clients during weekends and emergencies, we also offer a supplementary frozen food program. Five complete frozen hot trays are packaged in one case and delivered to the client. These frozen trays may be heated in a conventional or microwave oven.
Dietary changes
One service that sets Meals on Wheels apart from other programs is our collaborative efforts with registered dietitians to serve clients nutritious meals who have special dietary needs. These special diets must be ordered with a physician's prescription. When clients are ordered to change their diets, Meals on Wheels must have a new physician's prescription on file before we can change their existing order. Physicians may fax these prescriptions to 317.633.6320.
