It’s Time to Vote!

During election season our airwaves are filled with negative campaign ads from both political parties. Often it’s difficult to separate the issues from the hype. People who are overwhelmed with too much negative information can become indifferent and may decide not to vote.

Seniors have a vested interest in the outcomes of elections. It’s important to understand both how to vote and the implications of choosing particular candidates. Some issues of particular relevance for older people include:

  • Health care
  • Long-term care
  • Medicare
  • Pensions
  • Social Security

Some online places to go for information about voting include:

Indiana Secretary of State (www.in.gov/sos)
“Election Day HQ” offers information about polling places, identification requirements, provisional ballots and other developments related to the coming elections.

Indiana Statewide Voter Registration System (www.indianavoters.com)
By providing your name, county and date of birth, you can confirm your voter registration, find your polling place and access provisional ballot information.

Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (www.in.gov/bmv)
Find information here about special branch hours, ID requirements and FREE ID CARD. Please note: Voters residing at state licensed care facilities who are voting at precinct polling places in those facilities are not required to provide proof of identification before voting in an election [IC 3-11-8-25(e)].
Indianapolis Marion County Polling Place Locator (www.indygov.org)
By entering your address and birth date, you can access polling place information (including maps and pictures!), a list of ALL the candidates for the upcoming general election and confirm your registration.

Project Vote Smart (www.vote-smart.org)
Comprehensive information on current office holders and candidates can be located here, including voting records, biographical information, position on issues, contact information and much more. Visitors may input a nine-digit Zip Code (i.e., 46240‑3062) for a list of current state elections and candidates.

AARP Voters’ Guides (www.aarp.org/issues)
For a balanced, in-depth look at U.S. House of Representatives and State House races, this site provides positions of the candidates in their own words on those issues that matter most to older people.

What’s a Provisional Ballot?
Provisional ballots are used to record votes when there is some question as to the voter’s eligibility. Wikipedia, a leading online open-source encyclopedia, has a great explanation for provisional ballot.

Remember, your voice is vitally important in the democratic process! Don’t let television hype and radio blather turn you away from voting in your own best interests. The next elections will be held on November 7, 2006.
