Talking With Your Pharmacist

A majority of elderly take two or more prescription medications per day. It is estimated that nationwide, half of all prescriptions issued are used improperly. Factors such as age and other prescription, herbal and non-prescription medications can affect the way individuals absorb medications. Pharmacists -- who are experts on medicines and their benefits, side effects and interactions -- can be of great assistance to people trying to understand these complex relationships.

The next time you visit your pharmacy, be sure to ask lots of questions to be sure you’re taking your medications safely.

Questions for the Pharmacist

  • What is the name of this medicine and what does it do?
  • Is there a generic substitute for this medicine?
  • How should I take this medicine?
  • When do I take this medicine?
  • How long will I be taking this medicine?
  • Will other prescriptions, medicines and herbal supplements interfere with this medicine?
  • What foods, drinks or activities should I avoid while taking this medicine?
  • What are the possible side effects of taking this medicine and what should I do if they occur?
  • What if I miss a dose?

Choosing one pharmacist, particularly if you take many different medications or see more than one doctor, is a great way to ensure you receive the proper medications and information. Remember, some interactions can be dangerous. Talking to your pharmacist can help keep you healthy and safe.
