Elderly people and those who are ill or on medications can be particularly vulnerable to serious heat-related health problems during the summer months.
Heat exhaustion can affect people who are exposed to high temperatures for prolonged periods of time, especially if they don’t have proper intake of fluids.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include weakness, tiredness, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and muscle cramps. If the body loses its ability to regulate temperature in extreme heat, a sometimes fatal condition called heat stroke can occur. In addition to the symptoms of heat exhaustion, heat stroke can cause higher heart rates, confusion and unconsciousness.
