Regional MOWs Join Indianapolis in Mayors for Meals Day

Marion, Hamilton, Hancock, Shelby, Counties participate in national event

One day after the Indianapolis area was socked with half a foot of snow, Providence smiled upon our region with a mild, sunny afternoon for the national Mayors for Meals event on March 22.

Mayor Bart Peterson delivered meals to two clients in Marion County . The mayor sat at length with the clients and chatted, accompanied by Meals on Wheels Executive Director Barb Morris and Board President David Owen. From the Mayor's office, Deputy Director for Community Affairs (and MOW Board member) Mike Carter also attended, along with Justin Ohlemiller, press secretary. The mayor's office has committed to a monthly schedule delivering meals.

In neighboring Shelby County , Shelbyville Mayor Scott Ferguson delivered meals and Dee Perkins, Executive Director of Shelby County Meals on Wheels , Inc., drove the delivery vehicle. “ We were successful in our Mayors for Meals delivery today,” said Perkins, “Mayor Ferguson was most willing to accommodate us in our campaign, and it was pretty informative for him to see what we do. The mayor has also volunteered two city workers to volunteer one day a month for our program!”

Patty Grinstead, Executive Director of Hancock County , delivered meals with Hancock County Sheriff Nick Gulling and Greenfield Chief of Police Joe Grebmeier. “We had a really good time with them, and our local paper showed up to take pictures!”

Margaret Lukes, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County, Inc., delivered meals with representatives from the Noblesville mayor's office. “The clients were so pleased! What a great day to get to deliver meals!” said Lukes.
